How to complete a U.S. Ski & Snowboard and Far West Membership
All athletes in the Far West Division must hold a U.S. Ski & Snowboard and Far West Membership to compete in sanctioned events. In order to obtain that membership, please follow these few steps.
- Visit US Ski and Snowboard’s Website
- Click on ‘Become a Member’
- Either ‘Create an Account’ or ‘Log in’ to your My U.S. Ski & Snowboard account.
- From your ‘My Account’ box, choose ‘Register a new U.S. Ski & Snowboard member.
- You will need to choose a competitor license based on your age and choose the Far West Division, plus include your club.
- You will complete all steps and check out at the end.

How to register for a U.S. Ski & Snowboard race
My child is a first year FIS athlete, now what?
The world seems to change and many questions come up when your child becomes a first year U18 and a FIS athlete. Hopefully this will help during the transition. Please remember that this is a guide. For detailed information regarding your athletes FIS participation and schedule contact your coach.
First item when becoming a FIS athlete is to make sure that the athlete has both a U.S. Ski & Snowboard /Far West membership and a FIS membership. All memberships can be taken care of at one time through the membership department at USSA. FIS memberships must be completed by August 15th in order to be on time, a U.S. Ski & Snowboard and Divisional membership are also required. All three of these memberships can be completed through your ‘My U.S. Ski & Snowboard ‘ account. Please contact email@example.com with further questions.
Qualifying for races/Selection Boards
Registration for U.S. Ski & Snowboard/Far West races remains the same. For FIS events athletes must qualify in order to participate in these events. Qualifications are based on the current U.S. Ski & Snowboard points list.
The points list that will be used to create selection boards for each event are posted on the U18/U21/SRs Schedule and Results page, along with the quota and date the selections will open.
These selection boards open approximately 2 to 3 weeks prior to an event. An email will go out to the U18+ hotline, and a posting will be made on the homepage of the Far West Skiing website as a notification that the selection boards are open. Athletes have 72 hours to respond to an open selection board. Selections continue down the alternate list until all selection spots have been filled. Many times alternate spots will become filled close to the the event date.
Registering for an FIS event
Once selections have been made an athlete will have 72 hours to respond to the Far West office if they ‘will’ or ‘will not’ be filling that selection/alternate spot, along with all registration paperwork, please follow the directions listed for that specific event. No athlete can register directly with the race organizer for a FIS event. All selected and alternate athletes that respond with a yes must send in their registration pages to the Far West office within that 72 hour time period.
Different tiers of FIS races
There are tiers of FIS racing that the Far West helps select athletes for.
- Elite FIS series is the top tier of FIS racing in the Western Region. Invitations are open to Far West Divisional quota with no quota expansion.
- The WR FIS series is a level of FIS racing in the Western Region. Invitations are open to the Far West Divisional Quota and allows for quota expansion.
- WR NJR FIS Invitations are open to U18 and U21 athletes only.

How to apply for an Out of Division U.S. Ski & Snowboard race
No one (competitor, coach, parent, legal guardian) may enter an athlete in a race in another division/region without prior approval from the Far West office. The philosophy of the U.S. Ski & Snowboard is to discourage unnecessary out-of-division travel. The following policy will apply:
- All requests must be made by the athlete’s coach.
- All requests must be submitted to the Far West office in writing, at least three weeks (7 days) prior to the race.
- Racers must meet all qualifications of the host division/region.
- Out-of-Division races will only be considered when the Far West is not sponsoring a race of equal caliber, at or about the same time.
- Exceptions may be applied for through the FWS office and will be considered by the FWS ACC.
- If a request is granted, entries and fees must be submitted to the race organizer before the established deadline.
